It’s Saturday Share Day – Week #4
It’s snowing today – but we’re not complaining! We still have green grass here in Western New York – and it’s January! And it wasn’t dark when I left work yesterday! Although we still have cold weather ahead, we’re past the “half-way” point of the winter season. We’re definitely moving in the right direction (for those of us who are not fans of winter!)
Today is the anniversary of two huge historic events that happened during my lifetime. I was nine years old on January 28, 1977 when it started snowing in Western New York. That snow forty years ago would soon be termed The Blizzard of 77’. It cost over 300 million dollars and an estimated 30 people died as a direct result of the storm. I remember tunneling out through the snow off our back porch and being able to step up on to our garage roof. A foot or two of snow now is considered big, but it’s nothing compared to my childhood memories of snow storms!
The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster also happened 31 years ago today. As a freshman in college studying to be a science teacher – I was amazed that they had chosen a teacher as part of the crew! One of Christa McAuliffe’s roles in the mission was to teach science lessons from space to children across the country. We talked about the mission in our courses and learned about the experiments she would be doing in space. I remember watching the coverage and the moment it happened. A memory that won’t ever be erased…
On Saturday’s, I try to share out some great posts from other bloggers to build my habit of helping others. My full-time (not so temporary) job is pretty intense right now – so I’m happy to spend time reading other blogs and sharing posts. I’m currently working on posts on our new smartphones and service plans (Republic Wireless and Project FI), ending the lease of a tenant we’ve had for 22 years, preparing to sell our house and the decision I’m facing about working another year – and more… Stay tuned!
On to the highlighted posts for Week #4:
The Financial Panther’s post Wealth is Relative aligns with one of the habits I am working on – Choose Happiness. And I totally agree about his points on where you choose to live and the impact that has on your wealth and happiness!
Amanda at Centsibly Rich shared a great post about what to do when you lose motivation to reach your goals. How are you doing with those resolutions? You might want to get some ideas from Amanda on how to re-focus!
A few weeks ago, TJ wrote a great post about investing – even when you aren’t sure what to invest in. It has some great comments too. Looking forward to hearing about TJ’s road trip adventures soon too!
Mr. Groovy pushed the envelope again and got everyone thinking about homelessness and how to help folks who are struggling. Check out I’m not a bum – I’m a human being and get in on the conversation.
Ian over at Retirement Rehab shared a post about robots taking our jobs. People are in denial if they disagree with points Ian makes in the post. Teachers might not be replaced by robots – but technology and online learning has certainly made an impact on education. And in my opinion – it has positives, but some real negatives too (and I teach both face to face and online…)
And congratulations to Holly and Greg over at Club Thrifty! Holly tweeted out a pic of their book Zero Down Your Debt on the bookshelf at Barnes & Noble this week! Greg also wrote a nice post this week on shifting your mindset to build wealth.
Finally, the world lost another great actress this week 🙁 Here’s one of my favorite Mary Tyler Moore quotes:
Take chances, make mistakes. That’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.
